Voting Question: State Residency and Divorce?

I was married 5 years ago in california, I am now currently a resident of TX residing in NC, my wife is a resident of IL and currently resides in Rockford IL. We have been separated for over a year but due to my schedule and cooperation we are now finally starting the divorce process. My question is, which state would I be able to file from. It would be convenient to file from NC but I hear TX and IL are both no fault states and they do not grant alimony or spousal payments on harsh conditions. Also would I be able to travel to one of those places and file the paperwork myself. It is a fairly simple divorce, we don't have much shared property, no children or real-estate. I guess also, I am trying to figure out if traveling to IL to get divorce will be worth the hassle, in order to make it easier for her but also to avoid the alimony and spousal payments....
